В Европа 10% от домакинствата са само от един човек, а 42,5% от тях са на възраст над 65 години. Делът на възрастните жени, които живеят сами, е значително по-висок от този на мъжете, което се обяснява с по-високата ранна смъртност при мъжете. 76,9% от възрастните жени, които живеят сами, са вдовици, в сравнение с 43,2% от мъжете.

Всички сме наясно, че самотата е един от най-големите проблеми за възрастните хора. Но фокусът не е върху степента на самотност, а в нейния вид – обективната самота (да живееш сам) е екзистенциално обусловена, докато субективната (да се чувстваш сам) е ментална проекция. И именно субективната самота е фундаменталната тежест на нашето време.

Отвъд цифрите има един скрит проблем: чувството за самотност при възрастните хора е една от основните причини за тяхната смърт.

Въздействие върху здравето
Ефектите от самотата върху здравето на възрастните хора са многобройни. На първо място засягат психичното им здраве, свързани са с риск от депресия, особено ако самотата е внезапна и неочаквана. Самотата генерира повишена тревожност, лошо качество на съня и повишена консумация на алкохол.

Самотните хора са с по-висок риск от преждевременна смърт – с около 14 % повече от хората с наднормено тегло (без значение от възрастта).

Чувството за самотност деструктурира когнитивните умения, разрушава социалните връзки и повишава риска от деменция. Според някои проучвания самота води до недохранване, което е причина за сърдечно-съдови заболявания и диабет.

Отказът от движение и разходки навън, поради липса на компания, води до костни и мускулни заболявания, редуцира двигателната способност. Занижените хигиенни навици и нужди провокират инфекции, които в напреднала възраст са рискови за здравето.

Намалената двигателна способност увеличава риска от битови злополуки и, ако си сам и не може бързо и адекватно да се окаже помощ, в много случаи е фатално. Самотата може да бъде толкова вредна, колкото пушенето на 15 цигари на ден, според констатация от 2017 г. на Американската академия по психология.

Смяна на модела
Въпреки че става въпрос за комплексен проблем, има много неща, които могат да се направят за подобряване на качеството на живота на старите хора. Трябва да се започне с промяна на отношението към проблема на най-близките, техните деца. Важно е изборът им за начин на живот, да бъде уважаван. Повечето възрастни хора предпочитат да живеят в своя дом, дори и да са сами, със своите спомени, със своите навици… Много изпитват болка от факта, че се отнасят с тях като с деца, затова близките им трябва да избягват подобно отношение.

Важно е тяхната самотност да не се превръща в изолация, да се чувстват полезни и социално ангажирани. Имат нужда от изслушване, дори ако става въпрос за история, която са разказвали хиляди пъти.

Главите и опашките на социалния прогрес и промяната на модела
Моделът на обществото ни е богата почва за покълване на самотата. Самотата, която сякаш е белязана с нормалност. Семейството, като социален императив, бавно, но сигурно се деструктурира и все по рядко се срещат семейства от няколко поколения, които живеят заедно – родители, деца и внуци. В недалечното минало това беше нормално явление.

Има мнения, че сбъркан е не социалният модел, а отношението към проблемите, породени от еволюцията на семейната структура. Промените в социалния модел на обществото трябва да са ангажирани с промени в глобалния начин на живот. От една страна напредъкът в медицината увеличи средната продължителност на живота, но от друга, социалното напрежение се повишава: все повече членове на семейството се налага да работят; възникват нови зависимости между семейство и държавни структури; появяват се нови и нови отговорности и все по-голяма нужда от допълнителни доходи. Но разполагаме все по-малко време за себе си и за близките от семейството.

Днес имаме почти неограничена възможност за комуникация с другия край на света, но по-малко незабравими моменти с любимите хора. Имаме тотален срив на раждаемостта и, естествено, по-малко членове на семейството, което означава по-голям шанс за в бъдеще да останеш сам.
